This Little Light of Mine….

This is a type of depression that usually occurs in the fall and winter otherwise known as SAD.  It can zap your energy and make you feel moody.  It is also known as the ‘winter blues’.

I struggle with this personally and it has taken me years to really recognize it and understand that I don’t have to just ‘ride it out’.  One very effective treatment tool for me is using a light box.

This is a box that gives off a specific type of bright light that mimics natural outdoor light. Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, easing SAD symptoms.

Here is the one I use.

Here it is turned on.

It also came with a storage/travel case.  I do take it with me if I go out of town.  Consistency is the KEY.

Every morning I turn it on while I get ready in the bathroom.  Ideal is 30 – 60 minutes EVERY day, but this busy mama settles for 20 EVERY day.  Better than nothing, right?  And it works!

I have been using mine for 7 years now and I can definitely say that it helps!  I have learned I need to start early October and continue through at least mid April.  Last year I used it clear until June due to our extremely rainy climate that year.  It was seriously bad!

If you have depression issues, it may be worth your time to research light therapy (or phototherapy).  I am not a doctor…just a mom learning to take care of myself.  Be sure to check with a doctor if you have severe symptoms of depression.

Depression can be such a ‘bad’ word…it can be nice to know you are not alone.  Bring your pain to the ‘light’ and it ‘lightens’ the load.  You know?  (yes, pun intended  Smile with tongue out)

Hope this helps someone!  If you have suggestions or questions, be sure to leave a comment!  Or if you would prefer, you can email me.

Have a blessed day,

Homemade Applesauce

Fall brings homegrown and farm fresh apples.

One of our favorite and EASY ways to use the apples is to make applesauce.

Step 1:

Put on a cute apron.  I got this one from my sister, Rachelle at Livin the Fit Life.  Handmade by my cousin Sarah.  Isn’t it too cute?

Step 2:

Gather the apples

Step 3:

Peel and Chop.  Place in a big pot and put in enough water to just cover.

Boil on medium until desired softness.

Step 4:

Enjoy!  I don’t add sugar…it has enough natural sugars.

A healthy snack super EASY.

What about you?  Do you make applesauce?  How do you make it?

Light The Night Walk 2011

Each year, in communities all across the United States and Canada teams of families, friends, co-workers and local and national corporations come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Light The Night Walk events and bring help and hope to people battling blood cancers.

Our family participated in the Light the Night 2011 i n September with friends and family.

(youngest doesn’t always like his picture taken…lol)

This particular walk is close to my heart because 8 years ago I was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer, Hodgekins Disease.  It was right after I had my youngest son and quite the shock as well!  He was 4 months old and due to my illness and treatments, I was unable to care for him fully for almost the first year of my life.  We were so blessed with a fabulous church family and friends who cared for our whole family during that time.  I’m talking house cleaning, meals, child care, gifts, encouragement, prayer and the list goes on and on!  It was quite humbling to need others in this way and to accept the help, but I am so grateful.

My angel was my mom.  She lives out of town and came for every treatment to stay for a week and care for me and my baby.  I do not know what I would have done without her!  Especially for caring for my son and nurturing him in his first year.  My sister-in-law and mother-in-law were also HUGE in my care.  Seriously…such a reminder why we need others.  We felt so loved and cared for during that hard and scary time.

And now….I have been cancer-free for 7 years!  Many times I feel like it was ages ago…other times it feels like just the other day.  Certain smells, for example, can take me right back to that time.  It has taken me this long to be able to participate in something like this because of the memories.  I only got a little teary when people spoke of loved ones gone.  It humbles me to know that I was given the gift of life while others had a different plan for their life.  Who am I?  Why me?  Such questions may never be answered but it reminds me to be faithful to the God who gave me life and to trust Him.

This is me with my hubby, Clark.  He is my ROCK!  He was Mr. Mom while I was ill and did it fabulously.  He never complained.  It was a very tough time for him too, but he tried to stay strong for me.

So, we celebrated with a 3 mile walk and lighted balloons!  Red for supporters and white for survivors.  What an awesome sight to see so many there to take part in something greater than ourselves.

What about you?  Have you experienced a ‘bump in the road’ like me?

Hope each of you have a blessed day!

Why I Clean with Natural Cleaners

So much talk about living green these days.  It can be overwhelming.  Where do I start?  What is it going to cost me?  How can I change?  What do I change?

Baby steps. Baby steps.  Make it easy!  I have begun taking small steps to detoxifying my home and my body.  It is definitely a process.

So here is 1 quick change…

Remove the toxins in your home from everyday cleaners.  Simply change brands!  Did you know that your skin is your largest organ?  Anything that comes into contact with your skin can then get into your bloodstream…or your children’s.

I started with the GET CLEAN STARTER KIT and SCOUR OFF and Basic G.

get clean kit

scour off

Simple, easy, and will save me over $3000!  It’s concentrated form is environmentally friendly with reduced packaging and recyclable materials.

Check out the Cost Comparison Sheet to compare the price with other brands.  For example, our concentrated Basic H2 will make a window, all-purpose and degreaser cleaner.  This chart alone is reason enough to switch brands.  Who doesn’t want or NEED to save money right now?  Did you see the cost of the window cleaner?  Less than 1c per gallon!  That’s crazy good!

I found Shaklee looking for green and safe cleaners to use in my cleaning business. The catch was, they had to WORK and they had to be cost effective.  I didn’t want my profits eaten in purchasing supplies.  I could no longer do my job due to the poisoning from the chemicals.  It was make me physically ill.  It sounds cheesy, but it’s true for me….these Changed My Life!

Oprah uses them too.  Here is a quick video of her with our CEO Roger Barnett.

vitamin test

How natural are your supplements? Follow this simple test to find out.

Do you know how natural your vitamin is?  Did you know that can do a super simple test at home with your multi-vitamin to see how effective it is?

simple vitamin test

Doctor Oz did this test on his segment of Vitamins & Supplements to test if a vitamin or supplement is effective by heating the pill in a vinegar bath.  Dr Oz said since most vitamins or supplements are not supposed to be slow release, you can do this test at home to check to see if your body can actually absorb the vitamins or supplements that you take.  I like this test best because the vinegar mimics the acid in our stomachs, so if the supplement does not dissolve in the vinegar, then they will not dissolve in our stomach either.

Vinegar Test for Vitamins & Supplements

1.  Warm a small pot of vinegar until it is 98 degrees.

2.  Add your Vitamin to the warm vinegar.

3.  Let the Vitamin sit for 30 minutes – if it dissolves, then your body has a chance to absorb it, otherwise time to buy some new supplements!

I picked 5 different brands to test.  My son did it with me and used it for his science research project.

We used vinegar and heat in the microwave to get as close to 98 degrees as possible.

This picture below is just a few minutes are the multivitamins were dropped in.

Notice the ‘stuff’ floating on top of some?  They never dissolved fully.  Yuck!  Centrum was actually bubbling and fizzing.  Notice also the coloring of the water.  This is coloring additives.

There are two basic kinds of vitamins;  synthetic and natural.  Synthetic means developed and natural is as it sounds…from phytonutrients.

BUT be careful of the ‘natural’ label.  Many are not using 100% phytonutrients and also may be heat processed and will greatly diminish the nutrients.

I use the Shaklee brand due to the purity of the vitamin.  Chemicals and fillers are not something I would pay to put directly in my body.

Give this a try at home.  Test your multivitamin and let us know the results here in the comments or on facebook.
