September {family picture recap}

The month flew by!  Here are some of our family high lights.

Caden started playing the trombone in the school band.

We were outside a lot!  We just love our neighborhood.  It has great sidewalks and a nice park.  Plus our street is gated and safe to play in the street.

I finally hung pictures on the wall!  It’s feeling more like home.

We experienced our first Arizona monsoon!

Caden finished reading the whole Action Bible.  He was SO proud of himself and I am too!

One Sunday we took a few floaties and went to the lake.  It was a beautiful day and a great way to cool off in Arizona.  We are bringing our raft next time!

On one of the many Target runs (we live dangerously close).  Caden keeps me giggling all the time.  He is such a goofball.

I started decorating for fall.  These cuties were made by my 2 older boys when they were each in 1st grade.  I love to save and put out the kids’ seasonal artwork.

Scorpion Hunt Hike with Usery Mountain and Ranger B was our September highlight!  We took black flashlights because they glow and counted over 50.  This one was big!  Most we saw were just little.  I thought I would be a bit creeped out, but it was really fun.  We will do this again for sure.

And just like that…..we are on to October!

What were your favorite family highlights of September?

My Laundry System {keeping up with a family of five}

Laundry is never ending isn’t it?  As soon as I empty one basket another is getting filled up.  Especially with 5 of us.  It took me a few years to find a system that worked for us, but I’m glad I kept trying because this really helps me stay on top of it.

my laundry system for a family of five

I have 3 boys and they each have their own bedroom.

I have a hamper in each room for dirty clothes.

I keep two hampers in the master closet.  One is for whites. The other is for darks.

Then in the laundry room on top of the dryer I have a basket for dirty towels and cleaning cloths.

My system is really simple.  I do one load of laundry every morning.  Start to finish.  Some days I do two, but almost always it is just one. If I am going to be gone during the day, I make sure to start is before breakfast and put it in the dryer before I leave.  Then I just ‘fluff’ dry it at night to fold.

Here are a few of my secrets and how my system gets played out …

Each of my boys have only have 8 outfits.  We seriously pared down on our stuff last year due to our 6 month road trip and I don’t think I will ever go back!  However, I will say having boys may make this easier.  Also, my boys only wear sport shorts (their choice) year round…even before we moved to a warmer climate.

My two oldest boys are teenagers and do their own laundry.  { can I get a woohoo?! }  Since they have enough for a weeks wear, they do their laundry once a week.

We each only use 2 or three towels a weeks for showers.  Now someone of you use a clean one everyday and may cringe at that, but it works for us.  We hang them up so they dry completely and then they get thrown in one of my morning loads.

This system just really works for us!  The baskets are never overflowing, we have clean clothes and I don’t have the job of laundry hanging over me constantly.

I have had several people ask me what the natural laundry products are that I use.

I use Shaklee brand.  They are a concentrate and last quite awhile and are cheaper (and safer!) than Tide.  I ran out before my order came and I bought an grocery store brand and my youngest son was immediately itchy.  The chemicals irritate his skin.  Plus I just like to know that I am using safe products.

How To Earn Money From Home {My Story}

There are many different ways to earn money from home, but I am going to share with you the way I know how and what works for me.

I have been blogging for {almost} 2 years now.  This seems crazy for a girl who didn’t even know what a blog was!

Since then I have l been able to generate an income while working part time at home through blogging and social media marketing.

how to earn money from home

Prior to blogging, though, my life was completely different.

My husband and I were burned out in our jobs.

We were in debt.

I had been through a cancer nightmare and felt physically broken down.

I was tired and depressed.

Life was changing for me as a mom as my boys were getting older.

Life just felt hard.

Have you ever felt that way?

Maybe you do right now.

But 2 years ago that changed.

At that time I worked outside the home part-time through my house cleaning business.  However, after realizing the cleaning products were making me physically ill [read that story here], I started researching natural cleaning products on the internet.  It was then that I was introduced to the blogging world and found Bonnie Donahue’s blog.

Bonnie uses natural cleaning products by Shaklee and has a TON of blog posts with pictures and uses of those products.

I devoured her blog.

I think I read almost every post in one sitting.

She was living a healthy and natural lifestyle.  She was earning an income while being home with her kids.  She was helping others.

I wanted that.

So I emailed her.  I went with my gut.  I NEEDED those products! I felt nervous.  I mean, really, who contacts a stranger and says ‘I want what you have’?  lol

You know what?  She emailed me back.  Now, we are good friends and have even taken trips together and my family and I stayed at her house last year.  I just love what the blogging community can offer and turn into.

Since that one decision 2 years ago, my life has changed to say the least!

{ email me at to see if this fits you too! }

My headaches went away.

I have more energy.

I have a renewed sense of direction and purpose as a person not just a mama.

We have paid off $15K of credit card debt.

I am able to stay at home with my kids which is my desire and dream.

I found something I am passionate about and LOVE helping other families.

I actually earn an income from blogging and social media marketing.

I got off all my allergy medications.

I have been given a clean bill of health from my oncologist and I credit a large part of that from natural health measures.

My kids are healthy and we all rarely get sick.

I have met many like-minded women all over the country.

My husband took a much needed sabatical from his job and we toured the US for 6 months in our 5th wheel with our 3 boys.

Because I took that step to reach out and find out if what Bonnie had was for me, life is not the same.

I joined Project Dream International marketing team (before we even existed!) and brand partnered with Shaklee and have not regretted the decision to email Bonnie at all.

Maybe you are in a similar situation and are just tired of being tired.  Maybe you are in debt like we are.  Maybe you are ready to help your family (and yourself) get healthier.  Maybe you want to be at home with your kids.  Maybe you just want some fun money.  Maybe you have a crazy dream like we did to travel. Whatever it is for you, let’s talk.

Maybe that one email will change your life like it did mine.

Let’s talk.

Iced Vanilla Coffee Smoothee

I love a blended coffee treat but they are full of sugar and empty calories, not to mention expensive to buy everyday.  So I whipped up one at home one day with my favorite vanilla protein powder and it tasted delicious!

Super easy to make too. It will save you so much money, feels like such a treat and is good for you because it’s packed with protein.  I have one for lunch and it fills me up!

Playing Tourist

My mom cam to visit us the first week of August which also happened to be the first week of school for the boys.  We moved here officially in May and I was so excited to have her come!  It was a super busy and fun week with showing her the town, the boys’  schools, enjoying the sun and pool time, eating out, coffee runs and shopping.

We spent one morning relaxing at the pool while the boys were in school and took youngest with us on another day.  You can see him floating in the distance.  lol

I made us smoothees daily!  It was fun to take care of my mom a bit in this way.  She does SO much for me… even long distance!

We visited Old Town in Scottsdale, had shrimp tacos at The Mission and window shopped.  We loved all the cowboy boots and colors!

One night mom treated us to Rustler’s Roost, a fun restaurant with a western flair.  We got cowgirl hats and I got to wear my Texas boots.  Caden wore his awesome Texan hat too.  We listened to live music and the balloon man came by.  This restaurant is know for the rattlesnake appetizer so of course we tried it!  My oldest loved it.  I tried a few bites but couldn’t really get past picturing his face and fangs.  lol  Then they gave us cotton candy for dessert.

rustlers rooste

Just about every night the Arizona gives us a beautiful sunset!  So we took advantage and took some great pics outside.

family august 2013

We had such a great time and it was sad to see her go.

Do you like to play tourist with out of town guests?  Since we’ve only been here 6 months, we still have a huge Arizona bucket list.  Can’t wait for more visitors!

Clean Bathtub Soap Scum Bathtub {Naturally}

My boys are actually really great about helping clean when I ask them.  I have a [short] rotating chore list between the three of them and I don’t know if I got lucky with their pleasant attitude or they realize that I actually don’t ask much of them.  Either way, I really do appreciate their help!  Between the three boys they share 2 bathrooms.  The oldest gets his own and is pretty happy about that.  I have a pretty easy cleanup routine that they do to keep their bathrooms fairly clean and disinfected {remember…3 boys!}.

However, when it comes to any deep cleaning … let’s just say they are not quite as good at that ;)

This is a picture of my oldest teen boy’s bathtub.  I do not even want to know how dirty his feet get to get the tub that black?!  The dirt mixed with the soap scum needed to go.

I use a natural heavy duty paste because it is non-toxic. NO harsh chemicals for this girl and her house.  Just put some on a really wet sponge and scrub away.

It came off SUPER easy!  It looks nice and white now.  So much better right?

Look again at the before and after.  A white tub makes me happy!

clean bathtub soap scum naturally

Now that the gunk is gone, he can go back to his regular cleaning routine.  I keep a spray bottle of a safe disinfectant in his bathroom that he can spray the tub, toilet, sink and counters with and wipe down easy.  It’s got to be easy at our house!  We like a clean house but we really don’t like to spend tons of time cleaning.

Do your kids have chores?  Do they have a good attitude?  Are your kids feet as dirty as mine?  lol

allergy and sinus relief and prevention

Allergy and Sinus Relief and Prevention {natural solutions}

This is the time of year most of us suffer with allergies and increased asthma.  For years I struggled with seasonal allergies.  I can even remember struggling as a kid! Then it seem to morph into a year round problem.  Before I knew it I was taking prescription allergy meds daily and fighting sinus infections at least twice a year.  My head felt stuffy most of the time and I got headaches frequently.  So 3 years ago, I decided it was time to find a solution.  I wanted to take action to prevent the need for medication daily.

Here is what I learned… Allergy and even asthma symptoms can be stirred by not only environment contaminants {pollen, cotton, chemical cleaners, etc} but by an unhealthy immune system.

allergy solutions

Here is what I do ::

1. Take a quality multi-vitamin

This is a huge step in boosting your immune system.  Most of us are deficient in the right amount of minerals and nutrients our body needs.  I take this multi-vitamin everyday and it has helped tremendously in how I feel and improving my immune system.

2.  Take an immune supporting supplement

Taking this has saved me SO much money in doctor bills and prescription medications!  It truly helps me to live a prevention life style.   I recommend taking NutriferonA Shaklee exclusive, Nutriferon is a patented, clinically proven blend of immune-strengthening plant extracts. When used daily, it increases the production of your body’s natural interferon, a critical activator of the immune system. Nutriferon works at the cellular level, by rapidly activating your immune system’s defenses.  I also take a double dose if I feel something coming on and it attacks it quickly.  I usually feel totally fine by the next morning!

3.  Take vitamin C

Your body is capable of many things, but it can’t make or store vitamin C. I take the Shaklee Sustained Release Vita-C because it offers sustained-release protection hour after hour. This brand has a unique all-natural sustained formula  that slowly releases Vitamin C into your blood stream over a 5-hour period.

4. Take a probiotic

Did you know that scientists now believe 70% of the immune system is located in the gut?  This is a good place to start to strengthen our immune system against allergic reactions.  There appears to be a surprising correlation between symptoms of upper respiratory congestion and sinus discomfort to poor elimination in the lower intestines. The best way to keep a healthy digestive system is to clean out toxins. I take Optiflora probiotic.

5.  Use natural cleaning products

Cleaning products not only irritate the skin, but their odors can aggravate upper respiratory problems.  Toxic cleaners are a huge problem for allergies and asthma.  By switching out to natural ones, you can totally eliminate the problem!  I use this kit for my whole house and this safe disinfectant.

basic g. tough on germs

I have followed this plan for 3 years now and since I started I am off all allergy medication and I have not had a sinus infection.  I found that it was much more effective to spend the money on the proper supplements to arm my body with the right minerals for prevention.  And it totally works!  I have saved so much money and time avoiding the doctor’s office and nursing headaches.

A seasonal attack is pretty rare for me know but if I do have a flare-up I keep 2 things on hand to find relief naturally.

1.  Alfalfa

It’s a natural anti-histamine.  Alfalfa will reduce and prevent the itchy, sneezy and coughing that comes with allergies.

2. Garlic

It is traditionally used for its  anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. You can also take it to help with colds, flu, and sinus infections.  I like this one because I know it is all natural and does not have the garlic smell.

This is the plan that WORKS for me!  It allows me to stay off prescription medication and feel icky and tired from allergy side effects.

For any questions regarding this plan, email me at claireshealthyhome(at)gmail(dot)com

{Gluten Free} 2 Ingredient Cookies

My youngest has an intolerance to gluten.  He just does not feel well after eating too much of it so I have been slowly swapping out ingredients and experimenting with healthy recipes.  Plus, eating more clean has been a personal goal of mine for my family.  In my search, I came across a recipe for cookies with just 2 ingredients.  Really!  I’m not talking a box mix as one of them either.

1. Oatmeal   { I used gluten free }

2. Banana

That’s it!  I found the original recipe @ The Burlap Bag.  I used the gluten free oatmeal because of my son but you can use regular too.

Here is what I did.

Step 1 :: Pour in 1 cup of oatmeal and peel 2 bananas.  Mash and mix with a fork.

gluten free 2 ingredient cookies

Step 2 :: Drop spoonfuls of mix on a greased cookie sheet.  Be sure to grease or it will stick!

Step 3 ::  Bake for 15 min at 350 degrees and then eat!

You can easily add in raisons, nuts, chocolate chips, craisons, cinnamon or whatever else you want.

I love them!  This is a healthy, easy and yummy recipe that is definitely a keeper.

If you make 12 cookies with this recipe you can eat 6 cookies and it only equals 1 banana and 1/2 cup of oatmeal.  Great snack and NO guilt!
