Spring Cleaning is in the Air

Thursday marks the official first day of spring!  Some of you have been buried in snow for months and are just itching for some bursts of green and flowers.

This time of year has me dreaming of summer when the kids are out of school, we are off schedule, playing outside, visiting parks and just soaking up sunshine.

To fully enjoy that season with my boys, I have always liked a thorough spring cleaning of my house.  I usually de-clutter and deep clean so I don’t have to worry about any big cleaning until fall.  Life is too short and I would rather play!

Last spring, I had a blog series called, Spring Clean My House.  Rather than reinvent the wheel, I am going to share it again this year.  I have it sectioned off weekly with different zones to focus on.  You can go at your own pace.  If you are feeling like superwoman, feel free to plow through it all in a week.  Or take it slower like me.  Either way, use this a guide to your cleaning and before you know it, you will be ready for summer play.

Naturally Wash and Prepare Fruit and Veggies

I grocery shop weekly and then take an hour to wash and chop the fruit and veggies so it simplifies my week of meals and snacks.  I like to really load up on the fresh stuff.  For a list of the Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen go here.

iphone pictures 1452

When I get home from the store, this is my best time to start washing and chopping.  You can buy veggie wash at the store, but be sure to read your labels!  Some have added chemicals and this totally defeats the purpose.  I use this natural cleaner to wash mine in because I know that it is organic (made with corn and coconut oil) and it is super inexpensive.  I save so much money with this cleaner because of it’s MANY uses.

natural veggie wash

Here is how I wash mine:

natural fruit and veggie wash

First wash your sink.

Next fill up with cool water and squirt a 1/4 tsp of natural cleaner.

Let it soak for 5 min.

Drain, rinse and dry.

Since purposing to add more real fruit and veggies in our diet, I have found a great little tweak in our snacking that helps a ton with getting my kids (um…and hubby) to eat more fresh stuff.

Every afternoon after school and up until dinner, I set out a plate of cut up fruit and veggies.  Trust me.  This works.

If you cut it up, they will eat it!

IMG_3524[1]

Fall 2013 072

They can easily grab a piece to munch on, especially when I am cooking dinner.

Another fruit trick is to make protein smoothees and load ‘em up with fruit.  After chopping some, I freeze them to easily throw in the smoothees.  I can even sneak spinach in and they can’t tell.  shhhhh….

We also love fries here.  So we have homemade carrot and potato fries here several nights a week with dinner. So much more healthy than drive through or frozen.  And it will save you money too!

5 Steps to Clutter-Bust and Tame the Stuff

It took me less than a week to fully unpack my house when we moved in a few months ago.  Seriously!  My secret?  I had already purged a TON of stuff the year before.  A year and a half ago we were preparing for our US RV Tour and had to go through each and every thing we owned.  Even our paper files.  That was hard!  We were downsizing like a crazy family to see what would fit in our 37 ft bunkhouse 5th wheel and what would fit in our 5 x 10 x 10 storage unit.

I know most of you are not going to have that lifestyle choice pop up BUT I did learn quite a bit from that major purge.

5 steps to clutter bust

Most of all, I love how much more simple life feels.

There is less to take care of, less to clean and gives us more time as a family.  Before, I felt stressed with the visual clutter.

Simple just feels more peaceful.

I followed 5 basic steps to clutter-bust and tame the stuff ::

1.  Empty

I went room by room, space by space.

For example, when I worked in the bathroom, I did the cabinets together and then the drawers together.

Completely empty the space of everything! This gives you a clean slate to work with.

2.  Clean

Now that it is clear you can clean the space.  Wipe it down, get rid of the dust and dirt.

DSCN0009

3.  Sort

Now it’s time to deal the the stuff dumped on the floor in a pile.  Take the time to sort and downsize.  This is the time to decide how many rubber bands, shoes, tubes of toothpaste, tupperware…(you get the idea) you NEED.

Make 3 piles : garbage, donate, keep.

I did not completely purge my entire house at one time.  I actually went through everything twice in a year.  This allowed time to make decisions on items that I didn’t know the answer to.

The first time, if I could not decide right away that I wanted to get rid of it or keep it, then it went in the keep pile.

I found with the second purge, the decision was easier.

My son has cloth bins for his toys that go on the shelf.  For him, we dumped the bins and took one away.  Then we said the toys had to fit in those.  It was easier for him to make decisions on what to keep and what could go.

4.  Organize and Container-ize

Next, you need to organize the keep pile.  Put like items together in a way that makes sense for you.  I love using bins!  They go on sale often and are easy to store things away.  I put some of the toys in the closet to play with at special times.  I put seasonal clothes in bins.  The dollar tree has some great items as well!  I organized my entire bathroom with bins from there.

  iphone pictures 006

5. Reassemble

Time to put it all back.  Personally I love seeing SPACE between the stuff.  It brings me peace. lol

My Laundry System {keeping up with a family of five}

Laundry is never ending isn’t it?  As soon as I empty one basket another is getting filled up.  Especially with 5 of us.  It took me a few years to find a system that worked for us, but I’m glad I kept trying because this really helps me stay on top of it.

my laundry system for a family of five

I have 3 boys and they each have their own bedroom.

I have a hamper in each room for dirty clothes.

I keep two hampers in the master closet.  One is for whites. The other is for darks.

Then in the laundry room on top of the dryer I have a basket for dirty towels and cleaning cloths.

My system is really simple.  I do one load of laundry every morning.  Start to finish.  Some days I do two, but almost always it is just one. If I am going to be gone during the day, I make sure to start is before breakfast and put it in the dryer before I leave.  Then I just ‘fluff’ dry it at night to fold.

Here are a few of my secrets and how my system gets played out …

Each of my boys have only have 8 outfits.  We seriously pared down on our stuff last year due to our 6 month road trip and I don’t think I will ever go back!  However, I will say having boys may make this easier.  Also, my boys only wear sport shorts (their choice) year round…even before we moved to a warmer climate.

My two oldest boys are teenagers and do their own laundry.  { can I get a woohoo?! }  Since they have enough for a weeks wear, they do their laundry once a week.

We each only use 2 or three towels a weeks for showers.  Now someone of you use a clean one everyday and may cringe at that, but it works for us.  We hang them up so they dry completely and then they get thrown in one of my morning loads.

This system just really works for us!  The baskets are never overflowing, we have clean clothes and I don’t have the job of laundry hanging over me constantly.

I have had several people ask me what the natural laundry products are that I use.

I use Shaklee brand.  They are a concentrate and last quite awhile and are cheaper (and safer!) than Tide.  I ran out before my order came and I bought an grocery store brand and my youngest son was immediately itchy.  The chemicals irritate his skin.  Plus I just like to know that I am using safe products.

Spring Clean My House : the Living/Family Room

We are on our last zone in the house for our Spring Clean Challenge

We have cleaned the Kitchen

We have cleaned the Bathrooms

We have cleaned the Bedrooms

Now we are on to the Living/Family Room area.

Whew!  It has been a lot of work but it feels great to have it all clean before summer hits with the kiddos.

[[ read all about the spring clean my house challenge here ]]

spring clean my living room

By now you know the drill!  Grab your supplies and do a quick 15 min pick up of the room so you can clean it all.

Spring Clean My Living/Family Room Checklist ::

  • wash curtains
  • dust ceilings, walls, baseboards, picture frames
  • wipe down light fixtures and light switches
  • dust and wipe down blinds
  • clean windows and window tracks
  • wipe down furniture
  • wipe down t.v.
  • vacuum/clean furniture
  • vacuum floor
  • steam clean carpet

Here is how I do each task….

Wash Curtains ::

I do this first so they are clean and dry to hang back up when I am done cleaning the room.

Dust ::

Grab your favorite duster (I like swiffer with the extended handle) and start at the top of the room.  Go around the ceiling, corners, walls, all the way down to the baseboards.  Move furniture out from the walls to get behind it.

Window ::

Wipe down the mini blinds if you have them.  Then wash the window, tracks and window sill.  I spray my natural all-purpose cleaner, Basic H,  and even use q-tips to get in the track and remove the gunk.

*** check the laundry and put in dryer ***

Furniture + Knickknacks ::

Again, I use the natural all-purpose spray, Basic H, and wipe down everything!  Remove stuff from furniture first to wipe down and then clean each item before you put it back. Vacuum couch cushions.

Floor ::

Vacuum the WHOLE room.  Move furniture to make sure you get it all.  Use the hose to get in all the corners. Then take the time to mop or steam clean the carpet.

Lastly, put everything back and enjoy your hard work!

Spring Clean My House: the Bedroom

How is your spring cleaning going?

So far we have cleaned the kitchen and bathrooms

{ If you are just joining the Spring Clean My House Challenge, read this post first to catch up. }

This week we move on to the bedrooms!

Spring Clean My Bedroom

I don’t know about you, but mine seems to need a big dusting.  I try to keep up with it to keep the dust allergy on the down-low and this checklist always helps reduce it big time!

So grab your supplies and get ready to spring clean the bedrooms!  Start with a 15 min clean up.  Pick up stuff off the floor, clear off dresser and night stand so you can deep clean faster.  I love baskets to help contain stuff I need to go through later.

Spring Clean My Bedroom Checklist ::

* wash curtains

* strip/wash bedding and linens

* dust ceiling, walls, wall decor, baseboards, door frames, light fixtures

* dust and wipe down mini blinds

* clean window, tracks and window sill

* wipe down lamps and knickknacks

* wipe down furniture

* flip/rotate mattress

* vacuum/steam clean carpet

Ok.  We are ready to tackle it!

Curtains + Bedding ::

Start by stripping the bed(s) and window treatments.  Have your kids help with this, especially in their room.  I do this first so I can get the massive laundry pile going while I clean the rest of the room.

Dust ::

Grab your favorite duster (I like swiffer with the extended handle) and start at the top of the room.  Go around the ceiling, corners, walls, all the way down to the baseboards.  Move furniture out from the walls to get behind it.

Window ::

Wipe down the mini blinds if you have them.  Then wash the window, tracks and window sill.  I spray my natural all-purpose cleaner and even use q-tips to get in the track and remove the gunk.

*** check the laundry and get the next load in! ***

Furniture + Knickknacks ::

Again, I use the natural all-purpose spray and wipe down everything!  Remove stuff from furniture first to wipe down and then clean each item before you put it back.

*** check laundry and get the next load in! ***

Mattress ::

Vacuum the mattress before you flip it then do the other side.  It will help remove dust particles!

Floor ::

Vacuum the WHOLE room.  Move furniture to make sure you get it all.  Then take the time to mop or steam clean the carpet.

The last step is to put the furniture back, remake the bed, hang the curtains and get a good dust free sleep that night!

I use all natural cleaners because chemical based cleaners are harmful for the air inside your home and for your body.  They have been linked to autism, ADHD, allergies, asthma, and even cancers in young children; not to mention making you just plain feel sick with a headache. I don’t know about you but I’d rather not chance something as precious as my child’s life, so I use natural products that are safe and effective.

How to Clean Naturally. {the only post you need to read}

Happy Earth Day!

Are you making any changes for your family this year?

Several years ago, our family switched brands.  We replaced ALL of our household cleaners for natural and non-toxic ones.

Personally, we made these changes due to health reasons.  We experienced first hand the ill-effect chemical cleaners can have in our home and our body.

After recovering from Lymphoma Cancer, I was determined to switch to natural products whenever possible

This has been our family’s journey for almost 9 years.  I am not perfect at it, I do not have all the answers, but I am continually taking baby steps and learning a lot along the way.  It is that important to me to prevent some of the illnesses I have suffered as much as humanly possible.

Since then, I am in remission, off my allergy meds and feel great!!! I am so thankful!

I have loved and been using Shaklee’s Get Clean Line for several years now since we switched.

They are totally cost effective, natural and they actually WORK.

Here are a few pictures from my house and friends……

I use Basic H on wood floors  and I am always impressed!

Basic H is made from a corn and coconut oil base and leaves the floors clean and shiny, without residue.

get clean floors with shaklees basic h

Shaklee carries an amazing dish line that gets the job done even without pre-rinsing.  It is also phosphate free.

The Scour Off can do wonders on your oven! It is all natural and looks and smells like pink bubblegum.  Don’t be fooled by the pretty smell…I use this concentrated paste for so many things and it totally works.

You can remove water spots.  The Basic H organic concentrate has hundreds of uses for just ONE bottle.  Super economical and I really like that it is so versatile.

You can even clean your tea pot.

The products can do just about anything!

And because it is safe, you can even have your children help 🙂  (Extra Bonus)

clean natural for your kids

spray bottles clean and pretty

For all disinfecting, I use Basic G.  It is safe and non-toxic, plus it cleans, disinfects AND deodorizes all in one step.  I can use it in my bathroom without getting sick or my kids having to breath a bad chemical.

Here is everything our family switched to:

Get Clean Start Kit (regular or un-scented)

Scour Off

Hand Wash

Basic G {Germicide}

I am sure it is pretty obvious by now that I love Shaklee products!  So much so, that I have turned getting healthy into a career.

I want to be honest with you, I am not “selling” these products just to “sell” something.

I believe in doing what’s right….AND using natural products around our kids, pets, and house is RIGHT!

It is up to us to give our kids the best we can.  We do everything for our kids, so why not clean WITHOUT harsh chemicals.

Not only is the Get Clean Line natural & safe for us, our families, and the planet, the actually work and by that, I mean…they ROCK….and they save you money!

Spring Clean My  Bathroom

Spring Clean My House: The Bathroom

Last week we deep cleaned our kitchens and now we are moving on to the bathroom.  The kitchen is definitely the hub of the home, but the bathroom is right up there as most used.  It can also be a hang out for germs!

{ If you are just joining the Spring Clean My House Challenge, read this post first to catch up. }

This week we are deep cleaning the bathroom and getting rid of the icky germs and soap scum.  It honestly is my least favorite space to clean, but the space I most want clean when I use it.  lol  Does that make sense?

Spring Clean My  Bathroom

To get your bathroom sparkling clean again, just grab your supplies and follow the checklist below!

Spring Clean My Bathroom Checklist ::

* wash shower curtain, window treatment, towels and rugs

* dust { ceiling, walls, light fixtures, cabinets }

* wipe down walls, door and light switches

* clean mirror

* clean countertops

* clean/shine sink and faucet

* wipe down cabinets { use a small brush or toothbrush to get in the crevices }

* clean and disinfect toilet

* clean shower/tub

* clean floor

When I clean a space in my home or when I owned my housecleaning business, I found the fastest and easiest way was to clean top to bottom.

Let’s go through the checklist together……..

***Begin with a quick clean up.  Put away items and clear off the counters.  Put the shower curtain, window treatment, towels and rugs in the washer before you begin cleaning to save time. ***

Dust ::

Get your duster (my favorite is the swiffer with the extended handle) and start with the ceiling.  Work your way down.  It will go super quick!

Wipe down the walls, door and light switches ::

I have 3 boys.  Picture muddy and greasy fingerprints everywhere and …ahem… missed potty shots.  Need I say more?

Clean mirror ::

Simple.  Spray with natural window cleaner and wipe with a microfiber cloth.  (THIS ONE is my favorite because it leaves NO streaks.  LOVE!)

Clean countertops ::

Spray and wipe down with a natural cleaner.

Clean/Shine sink and faucet  ::

I use a natural scouring paste with a sponge to get the gunk off.  Use a small brush to get around the drain and around the faucet.  Rinse well and buff dry with a microfiber cloth to get it shiny.

Wipe down cabinets ::

Spray with a natural cleaner.  Use a small brush to get in the cracks.  Wipe dry.

Clean and disinfect the toilet ::

I use my favorite non-toxic disinfectant for this tough job.  Squirt some in the bowl.  Spray the seat out and the whole outside of the toilet.  Remember I have boys!  Then scrub the inside and the seat hinge (again I use a small brush).  Then wipe down the seat and outside.  I like to just use toilet paper for this and flush it away.  It goes pretty fast that way!

Clean shower/tub ::

Remember we are deep cleaning.  Take the time to get rid of the soap scum!  If it’s got a lot I use the natural scouring paste with a stiff brush.  For the door use a good scrubbing sponge.  Let the paste sit for 20 min before you begin scrubbing.  For basic cleaning, I use a natural cleaner in the degreaser formula.  Spray and scrub with a sponge.  Rinse well.  { for shower doors with water spots, check to see if they are etched in the glass.  unfortunately these can not be cleaned off.  you need a new door }

Clean floor ::

I like to wash the floor on my hands and knees.  It will get it the most clean.  Don’t forget the baseboards!
