Chocolate Chia Seed Pudding

This has become one of my favorite healthy snacks that tastes like dessert.  Sooooo good and super easy to make!

I recently shared a bit about my Lyme Disease journey. One change I’ve made that has really helped is cutting out sugar. I am pretty strict but not perfect with it and it really has made a difference.  So I have been learning and trying several new recipes.

That’s how chia seed pudding came to be my new favorite for satisfying my sweet tooth … but without all the sugar.

It’s so simple to make!

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1/2 cup almond milk  (I like unsweetened vanilla)

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (or 1 stevia packet)

Fresh berries

Mix all ingredients (except for berries) in a glass or mason jar. Place in fridge for 30 minutes. Stir well and put back in fridge another 30-60 min. I get impatient and sometimes don’t wait that long lol. It depends how thick you like your pudding.

Serving size is one but you can double, triple, etc the recipe to make more at once.

Top with the berries and enjoy!

my simple morning routine

My Simple Morning Routine

I just started a new morning routine this year and so far I love it!

my simple morning routine

First let me say that I have always said I am not a morning person.  However, when I do get up and get going early, I feel amazing!  So I decided to change my thinking and start telling myself that I love mornings and just make it happen.

Mornings are challenging for me without a plan and a purpose.  So next I decided to write it out.

Before I share my plan that’s working for me, I want to also say that I may be in a different season of life than you and please, please do not compare! Your amazing morning routine may look different than mine and that’s ok.

For example, a sleep-deprived new mom’s morning routine will be completely different than a mom whose kids are all in school and she works from home. (my current season of life)

I also wrote out a very detailed plan with tasks that may seem ridiculously easy and simple because my brain needs it.

A great morning routine begins with a great night routine!

Setting myself up for success the night before has greatly increased how I feel about getting up the next morning.

Here is what I do the night before:

  • Clean the kitchen after dinner (waking up to a clean kitchen is awesome!)
  • Load dishwasher and turn on (my boys help with this)
  • Set out exercise clothes
  • Fill water bottle and put in the bathroom
  • Wash face and brush teeth
  • Turn off electronic devices by 10pm (working towards earlier.  baby steps)

Here is my morning routine:

  • Wake up at 6:30 am
  • Put on exercise clothes
  • Brush teeth.  (seriously.  it wakes you up!)
  • Drink 8 oz of water (I keep it in my bathroom for the morning)
  • Drink hot green matcha tea with lemon (I LOVE this one!)
  • Read daily bible devotion (this with the hot tea really sets my thinking for the day!)

— I break here to get one of my boys off to school and wake up the next one. —

  • Unload dishwasher
  • Start load of laundry (I aim for 1 a day)
  • Breakfast smoothie and vitamins with my boy before driving him to school at 8:15 am (THESE are my favorite!)
  • Gym (I listen to podcasts during this time) (check out the 7 minute workout app or youtube if you need something quick or at home)
  • Shower (I watch business webinars while getting ready)
  • Ready to work! (I have another action plan for this too!)
my daily nutrition
my daily nutrition

daily exercise
I gave myself permission to be ok without perfection.   If I mess up a day, I won’t let it mess up my whole week. And I may tweak it when/if I need.

So far I notice the most important tasks that really make me feel like I am setting myself up for an amazing day are the devotion (to fill and feed my soul), proper nutrition (because we moms often put that last) and exercise (it wakes up my brain and I feel supercharged!)

I love having a plan!  I totally feel like a better mom with these simple tasks.

I encourage you to make a plan too.  Think about what would work for you.  Your morning doesn’t have to start at 6:30 like mine.  Maybe it’s during naptime.  Either way try it and tweak it until it motivates you.  Feeds you.  Energizes you.  You deserve it!

Clean Bathtub Soap Scum Bathtub {Naturally}

My boys are actually really great about helping clean when I ask them.  I have a [short] rotating chore list between the three of them and I don’t know if I got lucky with their pleasant attitude or they realize that I actually don’t ask much of them.  Either way, I really do appreciate their help!  Between the three boys they share 2 bathrooms.  The oldest gets his own and is pretty happy about that.  I have a pretty easy cleanup routine that they do to keep their bathrooms fairly clean and disinfected {remember…3 boys!}.

However, when it comes to any deep cleaning … let’s just say they are not quite as good at that ;)

This is a picture of my oldest teen boy’s bathtub.  I do not even want to know how dirty his feet get to get the tub that black?!  The dirt mixed with the soap scum needed to go.

I use a natural heavy duty paste because it is non-toxic. NO harsh chemicals for this girl and her house.  Just put some on a really wet sponge and scrub away.

It came off SUPER easy!  It looks nice and white now.  So much better right?

Look again at the before and after.  A white tub makes me happy!

clean bathtub soap scum naturally

Now that the gunk is gone, he can go back to his regular cleaning routine.  I keep a spray bottle of a safe disinfectant in his bathroom that he can spray the tub, toilet, sink and counters with and wipe down easy.  It’s got to be easy at our house!  We like a clean house but we really don’t like to spend tons of time cleaning.

Do your kids have chores?  Do they have a good attitude?  Are your kids feet as dirty as mine?  lol

Lessons Learned from Blissdom 2013

Blissdom…where have you been all my life?!

This was my first year attending Blissdom, a blog networking conference in Grapevine, Texas.  Three days of meeting a few blog crushes, celebrities, social media gurus and a ton of new blog friends.

Blissdom 2013

Just looking at all these pictures makes me want to go all over again!

As I was looking back at my notes trying to digest all that I learned over the weekend, I came up with 5 good lessons I learned from the conference.

1.  Vision = Clarity.

You can only seize what you can see.  ~ Tami Hein

I have plenty of vision, but clarity?  It could use some work.  Tami Hein shared her process of goal setting in 90 and 30 day increments.  I love this and this will be huge for me in getting goals and projects done to keep in line with my vision.

2.  Start before you are Ready.

Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.  ~ Jon Acuff

I have plenty of ideas and I have plenty of to do lists.  But when it comes to execute I can get stuck and held back by perfection.  Time to get over myself and just do it.

3.  Learn one new trick a month.

I have a major list of all the new things I would like to learn and implement with my business and it is overwhelming!  I mean there are only so many hours in the day for this busy mama.  So I decided to focus on one new trick a month.

4.  I got on Twitter!

Wahoo!  This has been on my list to learn for so long.  Scott Stratten from is famous for twitter and I learned so much from him at Blissdom.  Then I met Tammy and she gave me a personal lesson!  Thanks Tammy!  I’m @claireshh.  Find me so I can follow you too!

5.  Honesty is where it’s at.

Authentic stories have conflict.  Share with readers that life is not perfect.  ~ Lisa Leonard

I have a personal story that has been in my mind for many months and I have been struggling with sharing it because it is so personal.  It’s hard to put yourself out there.  But by being honest, my story can maybe help someone else and that is what motivates me in sharing it.  [stay tuned for that one]

Whew!  So much to take in and process.  My most favorite part of Blissdom really was the people.  Everyone was just so genuinely kind and helpful.  I especially enjoyed hearing the personal stories and meeting so many different people with different reasons as to why they blog.  It truly is a special community!  Bonus for me was having a few [ahem] ‘meetings’ with my business partners and marketing team [aka mamas who work from home].  Love, Love, Love when I get to see these special women in real life.

Blissdom 2014?  I think so.

Maui Family Vacation

My family just got back from a vacation in Maui.  The last time I was on Maui was for my honeymoon almost 19 years ago!  Things have changed a bit since then, but it was still just as gorgeous as I remembered.

This trip was with my extended family…13 of us.  My grandparents, parents, brother + wife with their 2 boys and our family of 5.

This is the view from the hotel we stayed at.  Isn’t is breathtaking?

We headed right for the beach to snorkel and play in the sand.

The cousins swam everyday!  The hotel had 5 pools which included 2 kids pools with waterslides.

On one of the days, my sister and I got to ride horses on the beach while the husbands went scuba diving with sharks.  I think the last time I was on a horse I was 12! It was so much fun!

We also went to Camp Maui and went ziplining!  The kids loved that!

We did drive the road to Hana…..uuuhhhmmm.  That was an experience!  We made it to the 7 pools after a 2.5 hours drive going 15 miles per hour.  If we went any faster I got really sick.  My hubby made a video on our travel blog HERE.

Isn’t this tree cool?!

(photo taken by Livin’ the Fit Life")

This is at the end of the 7 pools and looks cold but it was warm and 80 degrees.

Here are the 7 pools.  You can just barely see the bridge at the top of the picture that we drove over to get here.

When we got back that night all 13 of us went to the Luau.  We were celebrating my grandma’s 82nd birthday and my grandparents 64th wedding anniversary.  They made a special announcement for them there and honored them both.

And this was the most beautiful sunset that night!

Ahhhhh.  By the end of our 7 days, Clark and I were dreaming of ways to stay.  lol  I’m sure everyone does.

The whole trip was such a blessing and had been in the planning stages for a few years before it finally came to be.  I think the timing was right since my youngest son is 9 and the boys and cousins are all old enough to remember the memories made.  I think it will be a special trip for all of us to remember!

Check out our travel blog for videos (including the shark dive!)

Have you ever been to Hawaii?  What island? Would you move there?  Do you travel with extended family?
